Declaration of War and Lethal Force Drift in Betting Markets

The updated threat of significant rain at Leopardstown and Haydock on Saturday has resulted in the two favourites for the meets’ showcase events drifting out to very back-able odds.

After putting up a career-best run on good to firm ground to win last month’s Juddmonte International Stakes at York, Declaration of War was pushed out to odds of 5-2 at Paddy Power Paddy Power for the Red Mills Irish Champion Stakes, as a wet, soft track is now expected.

Three-time Group One winner this season Al Kazeem on the other hand, who prefers a softer track, has been heavily cut into 3-1 favoritism, having at one point displayed odds as wide as 9-2 at Paddy Power Paddy Power.

Commenting on the situation of Leopardstown, Racing and Operations Manager Nessa Joyce highlighted the possibility of several conditions come Saturday.

“The ground is firming up in parts. We will probably go good to firm, firm in places tomorrow morning and will get a very early update on the weather to inform everyone before declarations” Joyce said on Thursday.

“The forecast from this morning has changed and now we expect rain earlier on Friday, with the heaviest falling on Friday evening rather than Saturday morning. It’s predicted we’ll definitely get over 10mm overnight and some forecasts suggest a lot more than that.

“With the ground continuing to dry and no rain here since our last meeting on August 15, rain would be welcome to a point” Joyce concluded.

Haydock Sprint Cup favourite Lethal Force has also drifted since the update in conditions, exhibiting a change from an initial 9-4 favourites tag to a much more humble 5-2, while Garswood, winner of the Lennox Stakes last start on good to soft, has been slashed significantly to 6-1 at Paddy Power Paddy Power, having previously displayed odds of double that price.

Clerk of the course at Haydock Kirkland Tellwright reported his team’s findings on Thursday.

“We’re due 10-15mm of rain. Our man John Kettley’s view is that we are going to get it from midnight tonight to midnight tomorrow. We have been warned in advance and have avoided watering the stands’ side track, which we’re saving for Saturday”.

The conditions are sure to play a key role on the result of both major events, with each field containing runners dominant on the varied surfaces.
